Pepe’s Taco
If it's taco time and you're in the area, this is a great place to stop in. It's been here for years and years (37! It’s kind of an institution out here, some folks make it part of their yearly Puerto Vallarta trip tradition), they have a huge trompo out front and it's always busy, those things combined make it a cool spot. If you're hungry you will smell the charred goodness before you see it, it smells fantastic!
The thing to get here is their Al pastor tacos, that's their specialty, and that's where they shine. The seating is indoor, but large open archways give you a full view of the busy tourist street outside. It's usually packed with people enjoying beers and food, the tables and chairs are fine, and the interior is just okay too, the tacos are definitely the main attraction here.
The service can be slow, especially with so many people, it took us a good 10 minutes just to order a beer one time, but other times it’s a bit faster. The servers don't need to try too hard, again being such a busy spot, so they don't lol. Not bad at all, just not service to write home about.
The tacos and all food orders come fast once you've ordered. They give each table a really nice selection of four fresh salsas, and they are very good, the salsa verde one is our favorite. The Al pastor tacos are charred and delicious, each with a slice of pineapple, onions and cilantro, the flour tortillas are warmed quickly and are also super tasty. You can opt for corn or flour, they do charge more for the flour but basically it’s because they are larger, and you get a good amount of meat freshly shaved of the trompo. I would say about 3 flour tacos or 4 corn if you are hungry for a meal, they are tasty and seem to disappear quickly! We also tried a chorizo crispy taco, which came out as a small crunchy tostada with melted cheese, it was pretty good too. We’ve also tried their roasted and charred spring onions covered with cheese, it was definitely cheesy and different and good with our traditional al pastor tacos.
The price is right on, definitely kind on any budget, and it's fun chomping tacos while getting a feel for that area, I wouldn't plan a day or evening around it. But great spot to swing by for some tasty tacos and beer!
